While some may argue that Punxsutawney Phil was wrong on Groundhog’s Day, spring and warmer weather are still approaching. Are you and your dog ready for those wet months ahead? Don’t let a little precipitation impede your outdoor adventures. Try getting your dog used to wearing a raincoat in order to venture out when it’s raining and not have to deal with a soaked dog (and wet dog smell) when you get home. We were lucky enough to try out and share one of Hurtta North America’s raincoats, the Eco Rain Blocker, for this product review.
Hurtta is a Finnish brand focusing on products that are sustainable for all dog lifestyles. This brand has been around for over four decades and flourished internationally. Hurtta prides themselves on products made of high-quality fabrics catered to individual dogs so that, as they state on their website, “they don’t have to stay home and miss out on adventures.”* I was really impressed by their thoughtfulness in designing functional and ergonomic items rather than simply looking nice. A detailed measurement and sizing system, reflectors for visibility, adjustable everything, and overall craftsmanship has sold us.
The best part, these products make life with your dog easier and more enjoyable. Fletcher is an outdoor adventurer but doesn’t always understand rain. With the Eco Rain Blocker, we don’t have to worry about any skepticism from him. Seen those videos where you put clothes on a dog and they turn into an awkward statue and don’t move? Not with this product. The Eco Rain Blocker is so lightweight and comfortable that Fletcher barely notices he is wearing it. It’s nice to have equipment that doesn’t slow your dog down.
Let’s break down some parts of the Hurtta Eco Rain Blocker that make it a great choice for you and your dog:
Rain Blocker: It’s in the name. There are long sleeves on the front and chest area (similar to an overall) to protect the body from mud and splashing. All seams of the coat are taped to keep out moisture. The neck is composed of an outer and inner waterproof fabric that serves as a rain trap. Simply button, zip up, and then use the drawstrings to make sure water doesn’t drip down your dog’s neck.
Versatility: This lightweight, comfortable fabric allows for use in warm or cold conditions. In colder weather, slip a light fleece underneath the raincoat for added warmth. We’ve used this when the weather is chilly but not enough to use a heavy coat or on windy days.
Comfort: The Eco Rain Blocker comes in ten different sizes to choose the right one for your furry companion. This jacket includes elastic bands to secure coverage for the hind legs, allowing full range of motion. These bands are a peace of mind that the raincoat stays in place regardless of how active your dog may be. An additional drawstring near the tail is strategically placed so it doesn’t cramp your dog’s style.
Convenience: Buttons along the top portion near the neck help to start the process of gearing up your dog. Instead of fumbling to get a zipper along the length of the back, the buttons allow more control in the process. There are also snap button options on the front legs to create waterproof sleeves for your pet. It doesn’t eliminate the dirty paw problem, but did we mention Hurtta has boots for that?! This raincoat easily rolls or folds up and does not take up much room in a small bag, making it ideal for traveling. We keep it in Fletcher’s “go-bag” if we ever leave the house.
Safety: The Eco Rain Blocker is fitted with several reflectors on the collar and rear hem for visibility. All of the ties and pulls are able to stay hidden so there’s little chance of getting snagged when frolicking through wooded areas.
Eco-Friendly: Each Eco Rain Blocker recycled polyester is made from roughly 15 plastic bottles. You’re welcome, Mother Nature!
Hurtta’s catchphrase is “Outfitting outsiders”* and I can say they are succeeding at just that. Below is the link to the Eco RainBlocker coat and Hurtta’s page explaining their measurement process, including instructional videos.
