I would probably rate myself as an amateur baker at best–for humans. When it comes to dogs; however, I’d rate myself even lower. I’d imagine the vast majority of you feel the same way. I’m going to venture a guess that maybe 10% of dog owners have made treats for their dogs (probably the same 10% that would have an Instagram for their dogs, but I digress…), but only once or twice. Well, we can all rejoice that today I am going to share the simplest DIY dog cake that you can bake at home. What’s the best part? Even if it’s not presented perfectly or you mess up, I guarantee your dog will still eat it!
It only takes seven ingredients to make the cake and an additional one to make the frosting, all of which you likely already have in your house:
INGREDIENTS
- 1 cup Flour (I used all-purpose)
- 1/2 tsp Baking soda
- 1/8 cup Vegetable oil
- 1/4 cup Peanut butter
- 1/2 cup Applesauce (two individual cups, as shown below)
- 1/2 cup Pumpkin puree
- 1 Egg

What else makes this recipe so easy? It only has four steps!
DIRECTIONS
Set oven to 350 F.
Often times recipes ask you to mix together the dry ingredients and wet ingredients separately and then you can add them to each other. I’ve got one response: ain’t nobody got time for that. So just put all of these into a bowl or your stand mixer and mix away!
Grease an 8″ round or square cake pan, pour in cake mix, place into oven, and bake for 25-30 minutes!
As you’ll see from the next picture, I didn’t have an 8″ cake pan. I used whatever I had in the house, which was a 9″ pan. My cake was definitely thinner than intended, but spoiler alert: Bentley didn’t mind.

After you’ve let the cake cool, it’s time to add frosting! (You could also serve as-is). To do this, you’ll just need to grab some Greek yogurt. Mix together 1/2 cup Greek yogurt with 1/4 cup peanut butter and spread as evenly, or unevenly, as you want.
Overall, this recipe takes no more than 45 minutes, and most of that time is just waiting for the cake to bake! I would say that it’s well worth it to have one incredibly happy dog. I used a pupcake mix that I bought online to make pupcakes for Bentley’s birthday, but had I known making a cake was this easy, I would have done this instead! Happy baking and I hope to hear how some of your cakes turn out!
